Meet Your Instructor
Your instructor, Kate Klassen, is the co-founder of Costal Drone and an aviation instructor and drone instructor.
She loves to fly both airplanes and drones and happens to be one of Canada’s foremost drone regulation experts.
“I purchased the Advanced Pilot and everything is included: Advanced Ground School, Advanced Exam Prep and practice tests, and the Flight Review. The videos were professional and quite well done, and the rest of the prep material was very helpful. I was able to finish the course within a few days, and received a 94% score on my first exam attempt. I’m now preparing for my Flight Review next week, with the helpful prep materials provided for that stage as well… Thank you Coastal Drone Co!”
The Advanced Pilot Bundle Includes the following 4 courses:
RPAS Ground School | Advanced
Our twenty-hour RPAS Ground School is designed to teach you everything you’ll need to know to become a competent RPAS pilot.
All of our ground school courses come highly recommended by Transport Canada and our students, and are compliant with TP15263 – Transport Canada’s drone pilot knowledge requirement document.
This course covers meteorology, radio operations, the laws surrounding RPAS and much more! If you’re new to drones, this is an essential first step towards becoming a competent advanced drone pilot.
To simulate an intimate teaching experience RPAS Ground School Basic uses high-end video and animations, giving you the benefit of being in a classroom setting without having to leave your home.
As an added bonus, the course is taught by Kate Klassen, one of Canada’s top drone regulation experts and an experienced drone pilot.
Exam Prep | Advanced
Passing the certification exam with confidence is what every drone pilot wants to do.
Taking our Exam Prep | Advanced course will give you a good idea of the types of questions you can expect and will give you some additional resources to help you prepare for the advanced exam. We even suggest a few tabs to keep open as you write!
You can simulate the exam as many times as you need to feel comfortable before writing the real Transport Canada exam. Our students find this to be an essential part of their training and we know you will too.
Transport Canada has a few “curveballs” on their exams. Our Exam Prep course, with over 350 sample questions, will help you to get familiarized with the TC style and explains why the right answer is the right answer to help you learn as you go.
Standard operating procedures guide
Professional pilots always use checklists and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
To make things easier for you, we’ve created an easy to use SOPs guide so you can learn how to create checklists and procedures specific to your operations with ease!
IN-person flight review and prep course
The “Flight Review” is the last exam you must pass in order to obtain an Advanced Pilot Certificate.
It is an in-person test which covers flight techniques and practical skills like map reading and air law comprehension. Coastal Drone Co has a network of flight reviewers and testing sites all across Canada so you can take your review quickly and conveniently.
This online program collects the fee for the in-person flight review, takes you through the process to actually book the test, and comes with a complimentary online course which will enable you to come to your exam prepared and ready to pass!

Most Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need certification?
Since June 1, 2019, anyone flying a drone outside in Canada which weighs more than 250g will require a pilot certification, regardless if the purpose of the flight is for fun or work. There are two types of pilot certifications – Basic and Advanced. The type of certitication you require depends on where you want to fly, and how close to bystanders.
What happens if I fly without certification?
Flying without a pilot certification can lead to hefty fines. Individuals caught flying without a license can face fines of up to $3000 for their first offence. For organizations, those fines can go up to $15,000! Worst case scenario is being charged with a criminal offence.
What kind of certification do I need?
There are two types of pilot certifications in Canada – Basic and Advanced.
1) BASIC is for flying in un-controlled airspace (far away from airports), and further than 30m from bystanders.
2) ADVANCED is for flying in controlled airspace (close to airports, and populous areas), and closer than 30m from bystanders.
If you are going to be flying frequently or for work, we recommend getting an Advanced certification. The Advanced certification gives the pilot the most freedom to operate
How hard are the Transport Canada pilot exams?
They are no joke! Transport Canada has some tricky questions in there, and it can get overwhelming. Taking our Exam Prep course is a great way to get yourself ready and confident to pass.
What is an RPAS?
RPAS stands for Remotely Piloted Aircraft System. It’s the technical term for “drone” and it is the official government term you will see in any laws or regulations related to drones. Previously, Transport Canada referred to these aircraft as UAV so many provincial and municipal bylaws will still reference drones this way, but it means the same thing.
What are the restrictions for drones that weigh 249g or less?
You must not cause a hazard to people or their property while flying your drone. If you do, you can be subject to fines and/or criminal charges. We always recommend getting at least the basic pilot certificate regardless of drone weight as it will only help you stay out of trouble!
