This category is for the class of drones that are exempt from drone regulations. This includes the DJI Mavic Mini, the Mini SE, and the Mini 2, as well as the Autel Nano series and many other small low-cost entry-level drones. If the drone weighs 249g or less ready to fly, this category applies.
There is no minimum age to operate a micro drone, however adult supervision is strongly recommended.
There is no restriction in Canada on operating a micro-drone commercially.

Basic Operations
Small Drone Category – 250g to 25kg
- More than 3NM (5KM) from Airports
- More than 100′ (30M) from Bystanders
- Outside of Controlled Airspace
- Never Over People
The majority of drones sold today that are more than 250g fall into this category. This category is further broken down by both Basic and Advanced operations.
Drones in this category must be operated by a certified RPAS pilot, of a minimum age of 14 or older.
If you aren’t sure if you will proceed into Advanced Operations, this is the minimum requirement to operate a 250-25kg drone in Canada.
Basic certificates are not restricted from commercial operations, if you’re just getting started flying a drone for work away from cities, you can use this certificate.
This course takes approximately 3 hours to complete, and is online and self-paced. Advanced Operations
Small Drone Category – 250g to 25kg

- Over People with Safety Declaration
An existing Basic Certificate is not required to write the Advanced exam. In fact, once you complete the Advanced exam, you will be issued a Basic Certificate until you have passed the in-person flight review.
Pilots must be a minimum of 16 years of age to obtain an Advanced category certificate.
If you intend to apply for an SFOC (Special Flight Operations Certificate) to operate BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) or over 25kg, this is the recommended certification to obtain first.
This course takes approximately 20 hours to complete, and is online and self-paced.
